However, it was the first close below the moving average in a lot of bars, and that increased the odds of buyers around last Friday’s close.

The bulls are getting a gap up on Monday’s open, and they’re trying to form a strong bull trend bar.

I have been saying that the odds favored a test of the moving average. However, a trading range was more likely for the bears than the start of a bear trend.

The reality is that traders who buy near the high on the daily chart and scale in lower, probably will make money. This is because the market is likely to form a trading range. At a minimum, the bears probably need a major trend reversal before they can get a credible reversal.

This means that last Friday’s sell-off was more likely to be a minor reversal in what will become a trading range at the start of a major trend reversal. If the bears are going to get a major trend reversal, they need to make the market go sideways for more bars, and they probably need a retest of the July high.

The sell-off down to last Friday’s low is a problem for the bulls. It is a reminder that the market is evolving into a trading range after the recent breakout of the previous all-time high in December. This increases the odds that the market will go sideways for the next several months and will likely have limited upside.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

The Emini gapped up on the open and rallied for the first 6 bars, forming a bull trend from the open.

The market has formed a tight trading range from bar 7 – 24. This is a sign that the market is deciding whether the bulls will resume the trend after the first 6 bars of the day, or if the bears will initiate a trend reversal down.

While the market gapped up, that is a sign of strength by the bulls, the market is finding resistance at the 60-minute moving average. This increases the risk that the market stalls around this price level.

So far, the market is entering breakout mode, and the odds slightly favor the bulls because of the opening rally. However, the market would not be going sideways for this many bars if probability strongly favored the bulls.

Most traders are better off waiting to see what the breakout looks like of the bar 7-20 tight trading range.

Friday’s E-mini setups

Richard created the SP500 E-mini charts – Al travelling.

Here are reasonable stop entry setups from Friday. I show each buy entry bar with a green arrow and each sell entry bar with a red arrow. Buyers of both the Brooks Trading Course and Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns have access to a near 4-year library of more detailed explanations of swing trade setups (see Online Course/BTC Daily Setups). Encyclopedia members get current daily charts added to Encyclopedia.

My goal with these charts is to present an Always In perspective. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini charts – Al travelling.

EURUSD Forex market analysis

EURUSD Forex daily chart

The daily chart of the EURUSD formed a strong 3-bar sell-off down to the July 30th low.

The bulls ended up getting a strong reversal up after a weak low one on July 31st. And the market tested up to the July 17th breakout point low.

Well, the sell-off was strong for the bears. It was still within an overall trading range.

Bull channels typically evolve in the trading ranges. And the problem that the bears have is that the sell-off down to the July 30th low is large, meaning the risk is big for the bears.

The Bears are still hoping for a second leg down after the sell-off to the July 30th low. This means that they will likely look to sell after the Bulls can get some second leg up from last Friday’s rally.

The Bulls see last Friday’s rally as a successful second leg bear trap. They’re hoping that today forms a weak low, one short for the Bears, and that tomorrow or Wednesday will lead to a strong reversal up and begin the test of the top of the second leg, the July 24th low.

As strong as the reversal up is for the bulls on last Friday, the market is still inside an overall trading range. The odds favor a second leg up for the Bulls. However, even if the market reaches the July 24th high, it could still sell back down to the July 30th low, relieving the trapped bears.

The Bulls are hopeful that the July 30th low is a major higher low that leads to a strong upside breakout above the June high. While this is possible, any rally we get will likely lead to a trading range, and the daily chart will continue to go sideways.

The bears will try their best to create a lower high and prevent the market from going above the June high. It’s possible that the market has to rally up to the July 24th high and create a double top, lower high, major trend reversal.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Price Action trading room.
