However, the bears failed to get a strong close below the moving average, and the bulls formed a reversal up.

The bears are beginning to get closer to the moving average, which is a sign of increased selling pressure.

The bears are trying to form a wedge top with the August 28th high being the third leg. Typically, when the market forms a wedge top, the odds favor a test of the most recent high, which is the low that began the third leg up, the August 20th higher low.

The bulls have been in control of the daily chart for many months. This means that the odds favor a transition into a trading range and not a bear trend.

The bulls will see a reversal up with yesterday’s close. However, the context is not ideal for buying above yesterday’s high due to the tail above the bar, which is forcing bulls to buy in the middle of the trading range.

This increases the odds of sellers above yesterday’s high and the bulls getting disappointed by the follow-through buying.

Overall, the daily chart is likely to continue to go sideways for the next several weeks as the daily chart continues to transition into a trading range.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

The market formed a small gap up on the open, triggering the buy above yesterday’s high and sideways trading for the first 13 bars of the session.

The tight trading range open is a reminder that today is unlikely to form a strong trend day up or down.

The opening range is small and therefore the odds favor an expansion of the range and the market getting at least a measured move up or down.

Traders should be cautious with the open. A tight trading range is neutral behavior. While the odds favor a breakout in either direction, traders should wait for a clear breakout with follow-through.

At the moment, the odds slightly favor a bull breakout of the opening range.

Traders will probably be able to wait for the breakout to be strong enough for a second leg, and then look to enter on a pullback. This is because the market is likely to form a trending trading day and therefore the market will likely test breakout points after any upside breakout.

Most importantly, traders should be cautious and not too eager to trade when the market is forming a tight trading range. Traders should be mindful that the range can remain tight for a long time before there is a successful breakout.

Yesterday’s E-mini setups

Richard created the SP500 E-mini charts – Al travelling.

Here are reasonable stop entry setups from yesterday. Buyers of both the Brooks Trading Course and Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns have access to a near 4-year library of more detailed explanations of swing trade setups (see Online Course/BTC Daily Setups). Encyclopedia members get current daily charts added to Encyclopedia.

My goal with these charts is to present an Always In perspective. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini charts – Al travelling.

E-mini end of day video review

Periodic end of day review videos will be moved to top of page when done.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Trading Course trading room.
