If both bulls and bears decide that a test of the 7,000 round number is needed, the market quickly gets a buy vacuum test of the round number.

Overall, the rally over the past three days is strong enough that the odds favor a 2nd leg up and a test of the all-time high. Traders will expect buyers to hold below the first reversal down, given the three-bar bull microchannel over the past three days.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

Today gapped up and rallied for the first 4 bars of the day.

The bulls see the rally up to bar 4 as being strong enough to likely find buyers below the low of bar 1.

The bears formed a strong breakout and follow-through on bars 5-6. This increased the odds of bears getting a 2nd leg down.

While the bear breakout on bars 5-6 was strong, the context was not ideal. This is because the higher time-frame context, such as the 60-minute chart, is in a tight bull channel. This increased the odds that the selloff to bar 6 would form a trading range.

The bulls have a strong bull breakout up to the bar 23 high. While this is strong buying by the bulls, it is happening later in the bull trend. This increases the risk that the rally up for bar 23 is a climactic bull breakout that will lead to exhaustion and fail to get a large 2nd leg up.

It is important to realize that this is thinking through the higher time frame context, such as a 60-minute chart. The current rally up to bar 5 is strong enough to be a bull trend day. This means that even if the market reverses, it will likely form a trading range and go sideways for several hours. This will probably limit the downside.

The 5-minute chart is trying to repeat yesterday. Yesterday formed a large bear breakout with follow-through and an opening reversal bull trend day.

So far today has the opening reversal and bull trend, but it is only bar 24 and there are several hours to go before the market closes. This means that the bulls will have to continue the trending behavior like yesterday.

The odds are against today forming the same pattern as yesterday and the bull maintaining a strong bull trend lasting all day. This means that even though the rally up to bar 24 is strong, the odds favor it evolving into a trading range sometime soon.

Yesterday’s E-mini setups

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

Here are reasonable stop entry setups from yesterday. Encyclopedia members get current daily charts added to Encyclopedia.

My goal with these charts is to present an Always In perspective. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

E-mini end of day video review

Periodic end of day review videos will be moved to top of page when done.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Trading Course trading room.
