Because yesterday’s bar was a strong bear bar closing on its low, that was a sign of strength by the bears and increased the probability of a second leg down.

However, the big problem for the bears is that the odds favor a second leg up after the late November rally in a test of the all-time high.

The sell-off over the past five days has not been strong; yesterday was the only bar closing on its low, and the majority of the bars overlapped Tuesday’s bar.

Today, the market is gapping up and testing Wednesday’s high.

The bulls want today to be a strong reversal bar closing on its high, increasing the probability that the market will test back into the tight trading range over the past couple of weeks.

Next, the bulls will want strong follow-through buying and a breakout above 7,000 in the all-time high.

The bears can argue they have a 5-bar bear microchannel, and yesterday’s breakout is strong enough for a second leg down. However, the reality is the sell-off down to yesterday’s low is a possible 50% pullback, and at a support level, this increases the odds of buyers around the 6800 round number.

Always in bears will likely exit above today’s high, especially if it’s a bull bar. This is because the trading range is more likely for the bears, and the top of the range might be above the all-time high.

The odds favor a test of the October 29th all-time high. There are fewer than two weeks. There are only around seven trading days left in the year. This creates an interesting situation because if the bulls get a strong reversal up to the all-time high over the next several days, then the year will close on its high.

This means that 2026 will open at an important resistance level, the October all-time high, and the 7,000 major round number. If the market opens around this resistance level next year, that would increase the probability that 2026 closes below the open of the year.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

Today gapped up in the open and went sideways for the first 10 bars. The bulls ended up getting a large second leg up to the 15 high.

Whenever you get a gap up on the open, especially when the gap’s big, like today, the odds favor a second leg up. This increases the probability of buyers below the 1 low, and buyers below the 8, 9, and 10 lows.

The rally up to bar 15 is strong, and now the market is testing yesterday’s high.

The overnight hours rallied, making the overall market from the Globex low to the current high (Bar 27) fairly climactic. This increases the probability of the market going sideways for several bars and reaching the moving average.

Because of the buying pressure today, the bears are unlikely to get a strong reversal down. This means the best the bears can expect is a trading range, and not an opposite trend.

The bears first need to show signs of strength by making the market go sideways. Next, the bears need to start getting closer to the moving average. Once the bears can accomplish both of those things, they will have a chance at getting a reversal down.

Even if the market goes sideways for 20 bars, the probability will still favor trend resumption in the bulls getting continuation.

The market may have to test back to the bar one high. We had a trading range open, and then the market formed a bull breakout on bars 12 and 13. This means that today might be a trending trading range, which would increase a test back into the upper third of the prior range (bar 1 to bar 11).

Because of the strong buying with the gap up and the 5 consecutive bull bars up to bar 15, the market may have to go sideways for several hours before the market decides on getting trend resumption or trend reversal.

Yesterday’s E-mini setups

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

Here are reasonable stop entry setups from yesterday. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Trading Course trading room.
