This is a weak buy signal bar late in the upper 1/3rd of a trading range after a second leg up.

The Bulls want the market to get a final upside breakout to the upside today or tomorrow, driving the market up to the October 29th all-time high and the 7,000-round number.

Tomorrow is the final day of the year, and the market is deciding if it can reach the all-time high before tomorrow’s close.

Even if the market closes right around where we are, the reality is that traders will still see the year as closing near its high. This will increase the chances that next year will form a bear close below the year, allowing bears to claim they owned the year.

The odds favor the market gettizng up to 7,000 and the all-time high.

If you look at the March contract of the E-mini, it gives the appearance that the market reached 7,000 back in October. However, if you go back to the December contract, you’ll realize that 7,000 was never reached.

Because 7,000 is such an obvious round number, the odds are that the market will have to reach it.

Most important thing to realize on the daily chart is that the market is in a trading range after a fairly tight bull channel. While this is good for the bears and a sign of increased selling pressure, the reality is that the best the bears can get is sideways trading for the next several months. Even if the market gets back down to the November low, it will likely find buyers in that general location.

If the bears are going to get a strong downside breakout and a measured move of the two-month trading range, they are going to have to get a series of strong bear bars closing on their lows to convince traders that they have a chance.

Because of the 7,000 round number just above, the odds are against a strong reversal down without the market reaching the 7,000 round number in the October 29th all-time high.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

Today formed a small gap down in a bear bar, closing near its low with bar one. While this is good for the bears, it’s right in the middle of yesterday’s range. This increased the risk of a failed breakout below the bar one low, which is what happened during bar 4.

The bulls got a strong upside breakout on bar 4 and a small second leg up with bar 6. However, it was an outside bar in an overall trading range.

Big bars, such as bar 4 on the open, create a big risk for breakout traders. This makes traders hesitant to buy the close of bar four, and if they do buy, they’re fairly quick to scalp out if the follow-through is such that bar five is weak.

Outside bars, such as bar 4, are relatively dangerous on the open because the trader takes that buy and puts a stop below 4, they will end up losing 12 points if they don’t exit quickly.

As of bar 39, the range has been less than 20 points. If you lose 12 points on the day, it can make it fairly difficult for a trader to make it back.

This is a good example of why traders prefer to see a breakout forming with a series of bull bars that are not too climactic.

So far today has been mostly an expanding triangle. Traders should be prepared for the market to continue to go sideways for most of the day until there is a clear breakout with follow-through of the overall range from yesterday.

Because tomorrow is the final day of the year, traders should be prepared for a possible surprise breakout today or tomorrow as institutions position themselves for the end of the quarter and the end of the year.

Most of the time, the market can be sideways with a lot of trading range price action around this time of the year. Because of that, traders must be prepared for a trading range market and not be too eager, hoping for strong breakouts up or down.

However, if there is a strong breakout up or down, closing far beyond the range, traders must be prepared to act.

Today appears to be a continuation of yesterday’s trading range. Right now, the market is forming a triangle, which is in breakout mode.

Unless traders are comfortable trading inside of a trading range, they should wait for a clear breakout with follow-through beyond the overall range and a successful breakout of the triangle.

Below is an example of a Surprise Rally that happened on New Year’s Eve. It is always possible that a surprise breakout up or down could happen either today or tomorrow.

Brad Created the above Chart. Buyers of the Brooks Trading Course have access to a near 4-year library of detailed explanations of swing trade setups (see Online Course/BTC Daily Setups) linked to the Brooks Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns product.

The goal with these charts is to present an Always In perspective. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

E-mini end of day video review

Periodic end of day review videos will be moved to top of page when done.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Trading Course trading room.
