It is also forcing bulls to buy far from the moving average, both of which increase the risk of the market finding sellers above yesterday’s high and testing below yesterday’s low over the next couple of days.

Because the rally has been strong, the downside risk is limited even if the market sells off to the moving average, which is near 7,300, since there will likely be buyers not far below it willing to scale in lower.

The bears need to make the market go sideways to increase the selling pressure, and even then they need a strong trend line break and a likely retest of the highs, which would be a major trend reversal, to convince traders that they have a chance.

This means that the first reversal down, even if it sells off to 7,200, will likely find buyers below.

E-mini 5-minute chart and what to expect today

Today gapped up on the open and sold off for the first two bars, forming consecutive bear bars, which was strong enough for at least a second leg down.

However, the consecutive bear bars were against yesterday’s strong rally up to Bar 77, which lowered the probability for the bears and increased the odds of some kind of opening reversal.

On Bar 1, the open of the bar was the high of the bar, which increased the chances that the market was going to have to rally above the high of Bar 1, because if you look at a daily chart, most bars do not have the open at the extreme of the day, and that increased the odds of the market finding a pullback.

The bulls got a decent reversal bar on Bar 5 closing on its high, and it was reasonable for the bulls to buy above Bar 5 with a stop below Bar 4, and for the Always In Bears to exit above Bar 5 with a stop below Bar 4.

The rally up to Bar 27 was climactic, forming a parabolic wedge with Bars 12, 19, and 27, but it is a small pullback bull rally with open gaps, which lowers the probability that the bears will get a strong reversal down and increases the risk of sideways trading as the worst case for the bulls.

At the moment, the market is Always In long, and the bulls expect the rally to continue to go sideways to up.

The bears need to increase the selling pressure, and at a minimum they need to make the market go sideways, and once they have gone sideways for enough bars, traders will begin to think about the possibility of a breakout below the moving average.

Realistically, without more selling pressure, the best the bears can probably get is a tight trading range, which lowers the downside risk for the next several bars.

The bulls are hopeful that the market will break out to a new all-time high above last Friday’s high, but even if it does, realistically there are probably sellers not far above.

While the channel is tight on the daily chart, it is late in a bull trend, and that increases the risk of today forming disappointing follow-through for the bulls. This means that today is unlikely to remain a strong small pullback bull trend for the rest of the day.

However, as of Bar 31, the best the bears can expect is sideways trading, and therefore swing bears looking to sell should wait for a clearer setup, which means they need more selling pressure and likely a major trend reversal.

Yesterday’s E-mini setups

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

Here are reasonable stop entry setups from yesterday. If a trader was trying to be Always In or nearly Always In a position all day, and he was not currently in the market, these entries would be logical times for him to enter. These therefore are swing entries.

It is important to understand that most swing setups do not lead to swing trades. As soon as traders are disappointed, many exit. Those who exit prefer to get out with a small profit (scalp), but often have to exit with a small loss.

If the risk is too big for your account, you should wait for trades with less risk or trade an alternative market like the Micro E-mini.

Summary of today’s S&P E-mini price action

Richard created the SP500 E-mini chart.

See the weekly update for a discussion of the price action on the weekly chart and for what to expect going into next week.

Trading Room

Al Brooks and other presenters talk about the detailed E-mini price action real-time each day in the Brooks Trading Course trading room.
